Mint is the flavour that decides most pouch purchases. It is the first thing new users reach for, the taste people return to after trying everything else, and the category where ZYN and VELO compete hardest. But the two brands take genuinely different routes to get there — and picking the wrong one is why a lot of people conclude they "don't like pouches" after a single tin.

We compared the mint ranges side by side across strength, burn, moisture and how long the flavour actually holds. Here is what the difference comes down to in practice, and which tin is right for which kind of user. A pouch that costs 5 * 20 cents per can is not the point — the point is whether you will still want it on day ninety.

How we compared them

Every pouch here was assessed on four things: time to onset, peak intensity, flavour duration past the twenty-minute mark, and gum comfort over a full day of use. Strength figures are per pouch as declared by the manufacturer, not per gram, so they are directly comparable across formats.

The ZYN mint benchmark

ZYN's Cool Mint is the reference point for the entire category, and it earns that position by being unspectacular in the right ways. The mint is clean and slightly sweet rather than aggressively cold, the pouch itself is dry to the touch so the drip is minimal, and the release is even from minute two through to about minute thirty-five.

The trade-off is that Cool Mint is deliberately conservative. There is no cooling agent spike, no menthol rush at the front. Some people read that as refined; others read it as boring.

Where VELO goes differently

VELO builds its mints around a cooling sensation first and a flavour second. Crispy Peppermint is the clearest example: the peppermint arrives with a genuine cold hit in the first thirty seconds, then settles into something closer to a chewing-gum profile. The pouch is moister than ZYN's, which means faster onset and a noticeably stronger initial kick at the same nominal strength.

Moisture is the real dividing line between the brands. VELO's format gives you a faster, louder experience; ZYN's dry pouches give you a slower, steadier one that lasts longer. Neither is better in the abstract — but if you have previously found pouches "too weak", the odds are you were using a dry format and needed a moist one, not a higher milligram figure.

Browse by taste, not by brand

If you already know what flavour family you want, the fastest route is to start from the range rather than the brand. These three cover most of what people actually search for.

Going stronger: the 16–17 mg tier

Above roughly 15 mg per pouch you leave the everyday category and enter something you should treat with more care. Cool Mint Ice adds a cooling agent on top of ZYN's usual restraint, which makes it feel far colder than its sibling without changing the flavour much. VELO's Freezing Peppermint Max is the more extreme of the two — a genuine ice-burn that some users love and others cannot tolerate past ten minutes.

A word of caution on this tier: if you are getting hiccups, a hot face or nausea, the strength is wrong for you, not your tolerance. Step down rather than pushing through. The stronger tins are also where price per pouch matters most, since you get through them faster than you expect.

If mint is not the answer

A meaningful share of people who think they dislike pouches actually dislike mint. Fruit profiles have improved enormously in the last two years, and VELO's Tropical Mango is the one we hand to sceptics — it is sweet without being synthetic, and at 6 mg it is gentle enough to use as an entry point.

Which should you buy?

Buy ZYN Cool Mint if you want consistency, a dry pouch, minimal drip and a flavour that behaves the same on day one and day ninety. Buy VELO Crispy Peppermint if you want a faster onset and a colder, more assertive experience, and you do not mind a moister pouch.

If you are new to pouches entirely, start at 6 mg regardless of brand. Strength tolerance builds quickly and there is no advantage to starting high — you simply lose the ability to enjoy the milder tins later.

Frequently asked questions

Is VELO stronger than ZYN at the same milligram rating?
In practice, usually yes. VELO's moister pouches release nicotine faster, so a 10 mg VELO can feel stronger than a 9 mg ZYN even though the numbers are close.

How long does a mint pouch last?
Thirty to sixty minutes for most people. Flavour fades before the nicotine does.
