Nicotine Pouches vs Snus: What's the Difference?

Last updated: April 2026 · By Jonas Saeed, Founder of The Snus Outlet

If you're exploring alternatives to cigarettes, you've probably come across both nicotine pouches and snus. They look similar, feel similar under the lip, and both deliver nicotine through the gum. But they're fundamentally different products — and those differences matter for your health, your legal options, and your buying choices across Europe.

What Is Snus?

Snus is a moist, ground tobacco product that originated in Sweden in the 18th century. It comes in two forms: loose snus (you pinch and shape a portion yourself) and portioned snus (pre-packed in small sachets). The key ingredient is pasteurised tobacco — unlike American dip or chewing tobacco, snus is steam-cured rather than fire-cured, which results in significantly lower levels of tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs).

Snus is placed under the upper lip and typically used for 30–60 minutes. It delivers nicotine through buccal absorption, the same mechanism as nicotine pouches.

What Are Nicotine Pouches?

Nicotine pouches are a tobacco-free alternative that launched in the 2010s. They contain plant-based fibres, flavourings, and either tobacco-derived or synthetic nicotine — but zero tobacco leaf. Brands like ZYN, VELO, and LOOP have made them mainstream across Europe.

The Legal Difference

This is the single biggest practical distinction. The EU Tobacco Products Directive bans the sale of snus in all member states except Sweden (which negotiated an exemption when joining the EU in 1995). Nicotine pouches, because they contain no tobacco, fall outside this ban in most countries. This means you can legally buy and use nicotine pouches in Germany, France, Poland, Italy, and most other EU nations.

Flavour and Experience

Snus tends toward traditional flavour profiles — tobacco, bergamot, juniper, and wintergreen. Nicotine pouches offer a much wider range: everything from cool mint and citrus to tropical fruit, coffee, and cola.

In terms of mouthfeel, snus portions can feel slightly grainier and produce more drip (saliva). All-white nicotine pouches are smoother, drier, and more discreet.

Which Should You Choose?

If you're a traditional snus user who can source Swedish snus: snus remains an excellent choice with decades of epidemiological data behind it.

If you want wide flavour variety, legal availability across Europe, and a cleaner experience: nicotine pouches are the clear winner. For former snus users, we recommend starting with strong (8–12mg) or extra strong pouches to match the nicotine delivery you're accustomed to. Browse our Best Pouches for Snus Users collection.
